Norstar History Information

"The value your business will gain from Norstar will be apparent immediately. You will notice and appreciate the difference and more importantly, so will your customers".

Norstar is the brainchild of Northern Telecom. Northern telecom is a 104 year-old company. Originally, Northern Telecom was an extension of Bell Canada. After spending millions and millions of dollars on Research & Development Northern Telecom came up with the Norstar family of business phone systems. They wanted to create a new breed of small to medium sized business telephone system, but with the look, feel and application of some of the more sophisticated (more expensive)

PBX systems.

Norstar was quickly a hit. The customer could purchase a Telephone system with telephones that did not look so 70s' and 80s'. The customer liked the fact that they were getting a glimpse of what the future of phones would look like without sacrificing functionality and reliability. Another great reason for Norstar popularity was the display on all the phones. The telephone user could program the phone with ease. In fact, the whole phone system could be programmed from one phone with the help of the the LCD. No lap tops or intricate programming terminals were need.

One other selling point for the Norstar Business Phone system was the interchangeability of the telephone sets. The telephone sets that make up the Norstar family are as follows:

  • M7100: This a single line telephone set specifically designed for the Norstar System. It is usually used in conference rooms and break or guest rooms. Another good use for this phone is in a telemarketing room. Any place where it is necessary to only dial out and not receive alot of phone calls. It has a Liquid Crystal Display, has a feature button and a hold button. It is also wall mountable. Its colors are Ash, Gray and Black.

  • M7208: This telephone is a 6 line telephone has the capability of 6 lines, intercom button and a speakerphone button. It is mostly used in smaller offices requiring no more than six lines. It is a two-way speakerphone and its LCD screen show you the time, date and number that you are dialing. It will also tell you who is calling with-in the office and Caller ID is applied, it will tell you who is calling and their phone number.

  • M7310: This phone is considered the most user friendly of all the Norstar phones. Like its sister the M7208 it has a two-way speakerphone, Liquid Crystal Display and can be wall mounted. However this phone has an 8 line capability, 24 one-touch speed dial buttons at the top and a two line LCD. The two line LCD has soft keys underneath to easily glide the user through their tasks. The 24 speed dial buttons are for several different conveniences. The user can program each button for one-touch internal auto-dial, external auto dial or programmable features that would usually require three to four pushes of buttons.

  • M7324: The M7324 telephone set is best used as a console phone for medium sized to large companies. It has 22 buttons with lights next to each button. This allows the user to have up to 22 lines viewed on the phone. Another good application is to program the extra buttons as other extension numbers. This will allow the user to see who is on the other phones in the office and to handle calls more efficiently. It is also a two-way speakerphone and can be wall mounted. The phone can be expanded to have more line buttons by adding a Key Lamp Module. An M7324 can have a total of to KLM's per phone.

  • KLM: KLM stands for Key Lamp Module. This unit sits next the M7324 Console phone to expand the phones buttons uses. It will add 48 buttons to the M7324. It requires a separate power supply, called SAP unit.

  • M7410: This is the original cordless phone that Nortel makes for the Norstar Phone System. It is basically an M7310 but with a cordless handset. Also, all the functions of the M7310 with the exception of the speed dial buttons are on the handset of the M7410 Cordless phone. It was designed not so much for far reception as for cordless convenience around the the user work area. Realistically, it is good for about 70 feet from the base, depending on the work environment.  The replacement cordless phone is the T7406.

  • Norstar Teleconference Phone: This is a futuristic looking, full duplex speakerphone used in conference rooms or executive offices. It is directly compatible with the Norstar system. A must for people conducted meetings over the phone.

Norstar continues to be the leading small to medium sized telephone system of modern times. It is sure to remain one of the top selling, customer satisfying telephone systems of all time. Be assured that if you are thinking of buying a phone system for a small to medium sized company...Think Norstar!
